Trade shows don't start when you arrive at the venue

For many companies, trade shows are seen as three busy days filled with booth traffic, networking and long hours on your feet.

But some of the most valuable conversations happen long before the doors open — and long after the event ends.

Whether you're attending your first conference or your twentieth, a little preparation can make a big difference.

Before the event: Don't leave everything until the last minute

Too often, companies spend weeks preparing banners and brochures but forget the basics:

  • Is your website up to date?

  • Have you announced your participation on LinkedIn?

  • Are your team members aligned on the key messages?

  • Have you reached out to customers, partners or industry associations in advance?

Trade shows are relationship-building opportunities, not just marketing exercises. The conversations you start before the event often lead to the most meaningful outcomes.

During the event: Capture more than business cards

Events move quickly. Between meetings and presentations, it's easy to forget to document

the experience.

Take photos. Record short videos. Share updates on LinkedIn. Connect with people while the conversations are still fresh.

Even a handful of photos and notes can become valuable content for weeks to come.

After the event: The work isn't over

Once the conference is over, many companies immediately shift their attention to the next priority.

But following up is where much of the value is created.

Send thank-you emails.

Connect with new contacts on LinkedIn.

Share the information you promised.

Publish an event recap.

And take a few minutes to evaluate what worked and what you would do differently next time.

A little preparation goes a long way

Trade shows aren't just about what happens during the event.

Some of the most valuable opportunities happen before and after the conference.

That's why we created our Trade Show Communications Checklist — a practical resource

designed to help sustainability-focused companies make the most of conferences and industry events.
